Hi Chris,Truth to tell - we've not yet used it having relied on a trusty bucket! I can see no problems with the pp but the bucket is simpler, cheaper and if you're in an area where dumping over the side would be problematic you can use peat. Peat works better than water, masks the smell and is available from garden centres. Not as cheap as sea water but very useful. But so nice to get rid of a through hull!Mick

Hi you two !I like your description of the night in this gale, the hatches locked and hugging eachother on the genny. We have done some years travelling ourselves and I was always convinced the boat has to look after herself, if it comes to the worst. Who's drawing was Hannah built after? Hi,Thanks for the kind words. As to the drawing, all I can tell you is that closely based on one of Colin Archer designs although I have no idea which one. You might look up SKUA as a design and get more info from that but in all honesty we just sail the boat!

Hello, Enjoying your blog and photos and noticed that you chose a Portland Pudgy to be your tender. We are considering buying one ourselves and wonder if you still would choose the same? Our concerns are that it will take only a small outboard engine and this may present a problem in windy/currents conditions. Also wonder about landing this dinghy in surf. Ah, if only there could be unlimited dinghies aboard a sailboat! Alas, we must choose. Are you still sold on it? Glad you decided to keep your boat and do another trip.
Sorry about the delay - been a tad busy of late although I have to sa I spent the morning trying out the sailing rig on the PP so this seems to be a good moment to reply. Yes we are still sold on the dinghy. It doesn't row as well as our original but that was 12' long and could be rowed two up. It also weighed a LOT more than the PP and was a struggle to get over the side (particularly as I've got older - didn't seem to be an issue with Bee of course) But it rows ok given its shape (which helps keep us dry in lumpy seas)but I could see it will be a probably if we have 20 knots to deal with whilst rowing. No experience whatsoever of using it with an engine although the other PP owners who have come up to talk to us have been satisfied or at least never mentioned it as a negative. Surf.....hmmm that always seems the luck of the draw and again we have no experience of that in this dinghy. But mostly, for us, it gives us a chance of survival should it all go pear-shaped. Sat in a rubber tube, waiting to be rescued like a spoilt child doesn't strike me as particularly good seamanship. Let us know how you get on with your decision.
